Google might integrate a feature akin to Apple's Emergency SOS into the Pixel 9 and the upcoming Pixel Fold. This speculation comes from leaker Kamila Wojciechowska, contributing to Android Authority, suggesting that Google could collaborate with T-Mobile to introduce this feature, with the possibility of partnering with other providers down the line.
Similar to Apple's approach, Google's proposed SOS feature for future Pixel devices would apparently prompt users with a series of questions to understand the situation, rather than allowing a quick selection. A video showcased in the Android Authority article reveals the animation Google plans to use, guiding users to align their phone with a satellite.
Over a year ago, T-Mobile revealed a partnership with SpaceX for a satellite messaging service, though they didn't detail the pricing. As of January, the service remained in the testing phase. Last year, a developer identified code within Google Messages hinting at the imminent introduction of this feature, with Garmin potentially serving as the provider. Garmin currently provides a similar service for its InReach 2-way messaging devices, leveraging the Iridium satellite network. Iridium claims its network covers "anywhere on earth."
Regardless of whether T-Mobile or Garmin offers the service, it likely won't come for free — for example, Garmin's service starts at $15 per month. However, considering Apple currently subsidizes its service, there's a possibility that Google might follow suit and offer a subsidized or discounted service as well.
